Review
Praise for The Green:"[A] hilarious and loving look at golf generally and the Ryder Cup in particular...Happily for his fans, Caminetti will return in The Foursome, in which golf meets Deliverance."--USA Today"A minor miracle of fiction...Completely convincing, wise, funny, The Green stands on its own not just as outstanding golf fiction but as fiction period."--Steven Pressfield, author of The Legend of Bagger Vance"A rollicking tale full of raucously rococo characters...You think pool sharks are the consummate hustlers? Wait until you meet Eddie Caminetti."--San Bernardino Sun"If you think it's just about golf, you're missing half the fun. The richly drawn characters populating The Green are stand-ins for all of us, and the lessons to be learned beneath all of the humor and intrigue will stay with you long after the final page."--Stewart Cink, PGA Professional"Laced with colorful locker-room dialogue and golf aphorisms...this romp is par for the course, an insider's down-and-dirty view of golf competition stroke by stroke."--San Antonio Express-News

From the Inside Flap
The Ryder Cup. A biennial tournament considered the premier event in the golfing world, pitting the twelve best players in the United States against the twelve best of Europe in a contest so pressure-filled it can paralyze even the most battle-scarred tour veterans. United States captain Alan Bellamy, with one precious slot unfilled and none of the remaining top tour players willing to sign on against a clearly superior European squad, makes a desperate decision in his attempt to preserve America's golfing honor: he selects as his twelfth man one Eddie Caminetti, a low-life, two-bit hustler from a municipal course in South Florida. The most prestigious tournament in golf will never be the same. As the unforeseen consequences of Caminetti's participation on the Ryder team unfold riotously, Troon McAllister takes us into the minds and souls of elite professional athletes and poses a question as old as golf itself: Why would God create a game even He can't play?

Every year my daughters buy me a book that I either quietly return, surreptitiously dispose of or make a meager effort to read. Somehow they never seem to get it right. But I counted them out too soon. This year they bought me "The Green." It sat around for weeks undisturbed on my desk, until one day I noticed it on the edge of my desk and picked it up while talking on the phone. I paged through it casually expecting the usual sub-par fare and was surprised to find myself intrigued enough to give it a go.And what a great read it turned out to be! Eddie Caminetti has got to be one of the great fictional characters of all time. If you love golf and love pedal to the metal characters then this book is for you. This is one of those rare books that you simply cannot put down and when it is over you will crave more. But the author's subsequent offerings, while good, are no match for his first novel. This is the best golf novel I've ever read and if you are a golf nut, as I am, you owe it to yourself to buy this book immediately! I can guarantee you that you will just flat love this novel and its main character, Eddie Caminetti. You are in for a rare treat if you've never read this novel. Do yourself a favor and buy it now. I promise you will not regret it!
This novel, detailing the highly unorthodox strategy of recruiting a golf hustler to participate in the Ryder Cup, was at times brilliant, every bit the equal of some of Dan Jenkins' best work. At times, however, there were glaring mistakes in the description of some of the Ryder Cup matches and the shot selection of many of the players. For example, in one set of matches, it was stated that one group was playing number twelve, while the two previous matches had ended in ties. Not likely the third group would have fallen six holes behind the group in front of it. The author also messed up the shot sequence in one of the alternating shot matches. He has virtually every player hitting shots that land in front of the green and run up, a strategy not called for at PGA West and rarely seen anywhere other than British Links courses. These instances, while relatively minor, were frequent enough to detract from the flow of the novel and prevented me from awarding a fifth star. The author is supposedly a golfer, but you'd have to wonder, given many of the mistakes that should have been caught by the most casual golf fan. A well written, highly amusing novel, that could have been much better with just a little editing by a knowledgable golfer.
One touring pro said about another player who wouldn't play golf for money because of his religion, "Get yourself another god."To those of us who believe in the God who made golfers and golf courses possible, this is offensive. However, we understand the point behind playing under real pressure. Here, McAllister capitalizes on this connection between the sport of honor and playing for bucks. The reader will indentify many of the characters with living touring pros today. It's a great read. Many find the "locker room dialogue" one of its attractions, but for those who would rather have golfers of honor and character choose to speak with more intelligent words to express their emotions, this feature of this outstanding piece of golf fiction takes away somewhat its attractiveness.Still, a good read on a creative piece of writing.
I had thought Dan Jenkin's book, Dead Solid Perfect, was probably the most realistic and believeable novel about the professional game. That was until I read Troon McAllister's book,The Green. Even non-golfers would probably enjoy it as it is about more than golf. Great characters in believeable situations all handled superbly by the author. Eddie Caminetti is much more than a golf hustler with the game of a tour veteran. He has a mind like a steel trap and the nerves of a tight rope walker. How he becomes a Captain's pick for the US Ryder Cup team and how he handles the assignment are a treat. There is much to learn from this immensely entertaining book...about golf...it's rules...human nature and life itself. You will not want to put this book down. It is that good!!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. What a cast of characters. If you play golf this is a must read. If you don't play gold this is a must read. Very entertaining. I laughed outloud many times. Most of the "bets" Eddie makes are hysterical. I may even try a few of them on some of my friends one of these days. I also enjoyed the way Eddie goes about actually playing the game of golf. I'd love to know that I could hit it 250 yards straight every single time. I can hit the ball 250 but maybe not straight, I can even hit the ball straight, but maybe not 250 yards. He pulls off the greatest average play of all time.
If you're a golf nut , follow the Tour, obsess about the Ryder Cup, hustle your friends and get hustled from time to time, root for the underdog like Eddie Cammenti( main character) you will love this book. Compelling story, told with humor .
This is a fun story, fast reading. The thing that will slow you down is the frequent tip to the average duffer -- worth the price of the book. But it's the story, with great characters -- more than the average quirky golfer -- that keep the tale rollicking along.
