With stuff I didn’t want to know about the world and reminders of things I don’t want to remember, Anders Carlson-Wee’s poems in "The Low Passions" feel like they have exactly the right words, the perfect, accessible, blunt, beautiful, challenging, and surprising words. Each poem has a turn that provoked a gasp and widening of my eyes. What the persona sees in the mirror at the end of “Pride.” What the photographs reveal in “Taken In.” The dangerous reminder in “Dynamite.” The untranslated language of the owls in one of my all-time favorite poems “Birdcalls.” How the poems speak to each other in their placement in this collection. The way the first poem introduces and the last poem concludes.Like other poets I’ve been reading lately, including W.S. Merwin, I’m learning from Carlson-Wee that poetry doesn’t have be archaic and opaque and pompously clever to carry its revelation and mystery. There is heightened danger and wisdom in the matter-of-fact tone, multiple voices, quiet observation, the minimal use of adjectives and adverbs, a little humor, all stark details.

The Low Passions reveals a human theology that boldly restores Christianity to it's proper place as a misfit religion. These poems remind us of the troubles of being homeless yet also show how living without a home can be an adventure. This book is an experience with America's deeper dungeons. The Josh poems are human and gentle as they portray a man of contradiction. Mortality is a central theme explored throughout the collection. Overall it promises to move you with confessional simplicity. The book is a unified parcel of forgotten human experiences. At Fargo's food bank, a bag boy stands as still as he can although “the wind is in the trees again,” implying his imminent departure. A chest is nestled with near empty plastic water bottles, or gathered wood. Life is precarious, raw and vulnerable yet filled with the ineffable, the sublime.A purity permeates the poems in The Low Passions. Anders Carlson-Wee got into trouble for the poem "How-To" that was published in The Nation for using "black English." As a black guy that has a MA in English, who grew up poor and has also experienced the vagabond lifestyle, and who understands that language does not belong to any of us, and who - just to make sure the horse is dead - knows how many poor, disenfranchised folk talk and act and most importantly, think, I took offense at the backlash and not only read the "How-To" many times and picked it apart and appreciated it, I also decided to buy THE LOW PASSIONS based off what I read. Best bit of contemporary poetry I've read in quite some time. Wee understands our current low America. Which, in my opinion, is learning how to survive while struggling to be a human (decent/good/bad/eh?) living in a society where there's money everywhere except your pocket. People are out there living their best lives while most of the country is simply living.. I also like how Wee's Midwestern America looks, feels, and sounds a heck of a lot like my Southern America. People are trying their best and failing or giving up or dying. It's been a while that a poem has made me think about my own bad and terrible familial relationships and made me reflect on the scars I've got on my body.Also, Wee has versification in his poems! Say it ain't so! Especially in these times of insta-poetry that reads like statements. See Rupi Kaur.I really loved two of Wee's poems. I'm not saying the rest or bad but these two jumped at me. They are "Lodestar" and "Old Church." Both are written in different styles and cover drastically different subject matter but holy omg yes. Lodestar: "...You cannot constellate desire any more / than you can braid cord from the tongue's sinewed utterance / of a name, a name hallowed at night into the wind," "Old Church: "...At ten years old / I was ready for rage, even death, / even ghosts. But not this: his blond hair / bright with blood, his moan."This is a poet. Yes, he's been through the academic poet circuit. But, this is a poet. A true poet telling the truth. I am pleased. I have hope for the art, the craft.Kudos.
