About the Author
Sarah Harding has been a Tibetan Buddhist translator and practitioner since 1974. She became a student of the late master Kalu Rinpoche, and in 1980, she completed the traditional three-year retreat under his guidance. Since then, she has been a teacher and translator. Her publications include Machik's Complete Explanation, The Treasury of Knowledge: Book Eight, and The Life and Revelations of Pema Lingpa. She is a fellow at the Tsadra Foundation and has been on the faculty of Naropa University for nearly twenty years.

I have been a dzogchenpa with both Bon and Nyingma for awhile. I didn't do Chod in the past. Once I read Harding's book and got a very useful background in where Chod comes from, I then read Jerome Edou's book as well. I can now see that Chod is a useful tool for any Dzogchenpa, or for that matter anyone wishing to lose the ego or view point. Our lineages (Bon & Nyingma) both use "Laughter of the Dakinis" as a practice, and thanks to Hardings excellent work I have a deeper understanding of our practice. Sarah...do a similar book on Rechungpa and the teachings he carried forward from Mila.
The introduction has, like many of the translator's work, a distracting feminist slant. Rather than taking Tibet Buddhism as it is, it is instead seen through the lens of Western sexism. When Machik is told of her destiny she is surprised, like all of us would be. She doubts herself, as all of us would. The translator views this as "a bout of female low self esteem". It might actually be a bout of "low self esteem" or self doubt that is universal in nature. Later, when Machik comes to achieve her compassionate embrace of all beings, she is able to do that in a way that is "particularly feminine and motherly" and "lives up to the feminine stereotype of nurturing and nourishing." But that stereotype is not Tibetan, it is Harding's. In Tibetan tantra yab-yum the Mother Diety is Wisdom and the Father is Compassion. The view of emptiness is the feminine and the bodhicitta is masculine. So, these and other feminist views not only distract they can distort the value of this work. Skip the introduction.
This is a very good book on chod practice and its history.
If one only has five books on ones study shelf, this has to be the number one text to have. Its well written, covers every detail historically of practice. If you are a practioner or scholar of Cho or Chod--this is a must have book. High quality printing and paper, its excellent edition.
This extensive and fully researched translation is the go-to resource for Chod and Machik's enthusiasts.Sarah Harding is the definitive expert in the finer points of subtle translation of this important practice text, and provides biographical context. I bought two copies: one for writing notations and questions in the columns, the other for unimpeded pleasure reading. A treasured resource.
This is one of the great dharma books of all time. Sarah Harding is a wonderful translator and really knows her field. She doesn't just translate well, she takes the text to a new level of beautiful writing, luminous and clear, as suits this powerful text. Anyone who is serious about practicing Tibetan Buddhism should have this book, and spend some serious time with it. I keep returning to it, and it continues to yield more wisdom and inspiration for practice with every reading.An truly beautiful text, translated by a brilliant writer with a deep understanding of the dharma.
