This book is focused on details of conducting a symphony orchestra. It provides first-hand information about all aspects of conducting, except very professional & musical details. This makes the book very interesting for anyone who's sat in concerts, wondering how the the whole thing works. It's not for a general reader without a deep concern about classical music. I've attended countless concerts, especially in my youth, sitting behind the orchestra, facing the conductor & trying to follow all his movements going through the music. Leonard Slatkin has included enough autobiographical details as to connect various threads together & fill in so much missing information about the orchestra.
Whether you are looking for a book that is autobiographical of Mr. Slatkin, looking for great thought provoking musical tips for conductors, or a practical "behind the scenes" look at what a conductor goes through, this book has it all. Mr. Slatkin is honest, thoroughly knowledgable, and has stories that are totally captivating. If you know Mr. Slatkin only through his conducting, you will be amazed. If you thought you knew him personally, you'll be surprised. Highly recommended for conductors, musicians who are not conductors, and even non musicians fascinated by conductors.
The book seems to serve two audiences: aspiring conductors and laymen who simply love classical music. Even though I knew Maestro Slatkin during his years in Washington, I had no idea how much goes into the business of conducting. In delivering on his promise to unveil the mystery, he ranges from the psychological (how to handle different members of an orchestra) to the practical (is the baton really needed)? He makes it clear that conducting is indeed a business as well as an art. But beyond that, the anecdotes alone are worth the price of the book. He seems to have known almost everyone in the music business from Sinatra to Heifetz. Slatkin relates his own career and is surprisingly candid about what he regards as his failures. The book is long on the human side. If he were not conducting, he would like to be broadcasting baseball. His father, an accomplished conductor, instructed him not only about music of all kinds but about the superiority of the National League and, in particular, the St. Louis Cardinals.
Leonard Slatkin's Conducting Business: Unveiling the Mystery Behind the Maestro is an uneven mixture of autobiography, job description, and technical analysis, with a few amusing and/or moving anecdotes tossed in.Slatkin's autobiography is interesting but presented in a rather incoherent fashion. His childhood was happy, except for an emotionally distant alcoholic father. Wives come and go without much explanation. He takes jobs and leaves jobs, again without much explanation. The lack of a coherent life story, at least as given in this book, makes for a disjointed reading experience.Fortunately the insider descriptions of conducting and working with great orchestras are better written. And the final chapters are quite good. These include examples of the technical score analysis that conductors have to do, as well as answers to common questions, and a final assortment of anecdotes and thoughts.
I am on the board of a symphony orchestra--and their on-stage spokesman as well--and really had to have more knowledge of the various performing entities. I started here. A fine book with the kind of insight that has helped me. Recommended to you if you love serious music, either as a performer or, like me, as an enthusiast.
Entertaining and forthright. Slatkin gives us some very amusing anecdotes, and plenty of good advice for the budding conductor. Enjoyed this more than I expected to.
Slatkin's Human Account is an InspirationThe book's ironic, twist-of-a-phrase title is a clue that we are to become drawn into the enigmatic, somewhat circus-like world of classical music, and that we are to be treated to a soliloquy that dispels a portion of the classical music world's shroud of mystery. The clever title distills the dichotomy inherent in the broader subject of the book, in much the same way that an opera overture displays and partially resolves the main themes of an epic story set to music.Leonard Slatkin's Conducting Business is perhaps the single most important book to meet my eyes in recent times, because of the way it humanizes the conductor's profession. Mr. Slatkin's message is achieved with a level of humility and grace that is too often obscured by the cloud of celebrity that shrouds many celebrated Maestros. If you have never heard Slatkin conduct, you will want to hear him after reading this book. Here is one maestro that is not afraid to admit he has made a few mistakes along the way. This type of frank talk and modesty is wildly refreshing. Mr. Slatkin's monologue cites struggles between union labor and management, but in the very same pages of the book, we also read Mr. Slatkin's vivid recount of his own background and childhood, and of a time not so very long ago, when musicians took their greatest pride not in their union contract terms, but rather in finer points of the musical craft for its own sake. If one reads it with sensitivity, one can also perceive how early childhood experiences of Mr. Slatkin shaped and guided his delicate psyche throughout an entire career. I also come away with the idea that abiding by the rigid structures and conventions of a collegiate, conservatory education, and excelling according to its rules, are not necessarily congruent or essential for ultimate success in a musical career. Similar subtle contrasts, peppered with historical detail and fact, spoke well to me, a tail-end baby boomer. In the text is a subtle reminder that the Hippie-era concept of "anti-establishment" can still have many positive facets when applied to art; since many of these concepts have yet to be experienced by the under-40 set, this book provides a keyhole entry towards appreciating the mindset of musicians who emerged during socially turbulent times in America. For those just old enough to recall the pinnacle of traditional classical music and American cultural awareness, which, in hindsight, might be documented yet in history books as having peaked in the late 1960s, this book takes on another unique perspective. In the midst of the current economic chaos that seems to be assaulting all art music genres today, threatening both quality and survival, Mr. Slatkin's book is a helpful encouragement, and a bold reassurance that true art and musical creativity does survive, for those who hold fast to human foundations.After a personal life account, which I sense holds quite a bit still in reserve, Mr. Slatkin concludes his book with a series of technical discussions about conducting, with examples that might momentarily confound even the most confident of today's budding conservatory graduates. Conducting Business is a consummate artistic statement that comes, obviously, after a lifetime of achievement, with more expected moments still to come. Those who agree with me might even call it a testament. I come away from it with the idea that well-rounded musical experience, and a very open mind, are elements that are, more than ever, desired and essential on tomorrow's podium. Above all, Conducting Business is a rare account of a celebrated life from a masterful, yet very human, American conductor that can be enjoyed by baton wielder and armchair listener alike.
