Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, ABPP, is a licensed psychologist who is board certified in behavioral and cognitive psychology. He is codirector of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy; assistant clinical professor at the University of California, Berkeley; Diplomate and Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy; and trainer and consultant for the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy. He is author or coauthor of numerous scholarly articles and chapters on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and related topics, as well as seven books.Monique A. Thompson, PsyD, is a licensed psychologist. She is a partner at the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy and a Diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. She spent several years working as a research therapist at the Golden Bear Mood and Sleep Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley. She has published research on teen sleep treatments and memory interventions to improve CBT outcomes. As a seasoned therapist, a lot of the information in this book was not new to me... but I am impressed with the amount and type of information that is covered. I am also impressed with the very organized layout of the book! The book is definitely very much a workbook, with engaging and thought provoking activities. And there was some information that was new to me, such as some of the details about which foods help and harm sleep (and here I thought I’m pretty savy with that kind of stuff!). Even though this book is geared towards teens, a lot of the information is useful for adults as well. I recommend this for teens wanting better sleep, parents who want to help their teens with sleep issues, and therapists wanting to help teens (and other age ranges) with sleep issues.
Teen insomnia is a problem that is getting increasing public attention, and this book provides user-friendly, realistic, scientifically-based solutions.The Insomnia Workbook for Teens engages teens in active self-observation so they can identify their individual patterns and tailor a plan that enhances their natural sleep rhythms.The “for you to know†sections across chapters are a wonderful way to make sleep science and cognitive behavioral strategies understandable and the “for you to do†sections provide a clear path towards sleep-enhancing behaviors.The book’s style is clear and supportive, and there are some especially nice exercises that tap motivation by encouraging teens to express their personal values and goals. There are also surprising and interesting behavioral experiments that address anxiety about sleep.Written for teens, this book is also a good guide for therapists working with teens, and the principles and exercises can be quite helpful to adults with insomnia too!
Michael Tompkins has given us another great book for teens, this time with Monique Thompson. The Insomnia Workbook for Teens has researched-based exercises and practices that are clear and accessible. It is a step-by-step guide to good sleep habits and simultaneously helps teens develop healthy attitudes toward sleep. It includes helpful questions, self-monitoring and awareness exercises that encourage teens to be more cognizant of the emotions, needs, eating patterns, and socializing habits that affect their sleep. The book is another highly useful contribution to the field.
As a child and adolescent therapist I work with many sleep deprived teenagers who struggle with difficulty concentrating, mood problems and academic challenges - many of which improve greatly with better sleep. This is a crucial resource for teenagers and anyone working with them! The guide provides evidence based strategies to get kids sleeping and is presented in a way that is interesting and easy to access. Really glad the authors wrote this book!

As a cognitive behavioral therapist who works with drug free insomnia treatment, this is a great addition to the therapists' toolbox!But what I really appreciate about this workbook for my teen clients is:1) Thorough but simple assessment of what's getting in the way of sleep2) Plenty of charts to track and improve sleep behaviors3) A holistic approach to sleep improvement - this workbook addresses the physical, psychological, educational, social and family system life of the teenThere's no doubt that a motivated teen with a supportive family could greatly benefit from this workbook - for now and for building long-term sleep/life skills!
As a clinical psychologist who treats older adolescents with insomnia, I have been recommending this workbook to my young patients routinely since its recent publication. The writing is crisp, concise, and age-appropriate. The workbook encourages an individualized approach employing the empirically-supported techniques of CBT-I to address sleep problems. There are elements built into the publication to enhance learning, including plenty of forms. Developing these skills early in life will pave the way for a lifetime of good sleep.
As a clinician working with teens, this book is a valuable tool for client's struggling with sleep. The workbook style is great to offer concrete tools and examples in order to help clients process each step towards better sleep. This breakdown in steps really helps client's walk through what they are dealing with in a way that validates their experience as well as gives a jumping off point for continued discussion in therapy.
